These photographs follow the preparation of a pitched roof after its old covering has been removed. They show the supporting timber, the membrane and the rows of battens that will carry the tiles. The sequence ends with the roof battened and tiles loaded out, so it documents the preparation stages rather than a completed tiled surface. The close views also show how the work approaches existing brick walls and a chimney.
Old covering stripped back to the rafters
The first photograph looks across the exposed roof structure. Existing rafters run down the slope, and old loft insulation is visible between and below them. With the tiles removed, there is a clear view into the roof instead of an uninterrupted outer covering. The surrounding brickwork gives a reference for the height and direction of the slope. This stage makes the layers below the former tiles visible before they are covered again. It also provides a useful comparison with the later pictures, where membrane hides much of the timber structure.

New membrane laid over the rafters
The second view shows new roofing membrane being introduced across the rafters. A section of the timber structure remains visible above the covered area, while the membrane forms a continuous sheet over the lower portion. The change from the first photograph is clear: the open spaces between the rafters are starting to disappear beneath the new layer. A chimney stands beside the roof work, and the image shows the membrane stage before the repeated horizontal rows of battens appear in the following view.

New battens at the wall abutment
In the third photograph, timber battens run in parallel rows over the membrane. The view is taken close to a wall abutment, where the sloping roof meets the existing masonry. Both the membrane and the battens remain exposed, making their arrangement easy to distinguish. The thin horizontal timber rows sit above the sheet material and follow the slope towards the edge of the photograph. This is a different stage from the open rafters: the surface is now laid out with the lines that will support the tile courses.

Battened roof with tiles ready to lay
The fourth photograph gives a wider view over the prepared slopes. Rows of battens extend across the membrane, with groups of tiles stacked on the roof ready for laying. The stacks are separate from the still-visible battened areas, so the picture records the work before those areas have their tile covering. Seen alongside the close view at the wall, it shows how the same preparation extends across a larger part of the roof. This is the final stage in this particular photo sequence.
